Day 26

Amazing day and last post.
All of last week was a time of rest-for me, and restlessness- for Nate.
We did shop, go out to eat, bank, etc., and he did it all without a hitch. He spent time with friends, and even went to the new Bob's Big Boy in Morro Bay. (we are easily excited)
Today was an appt. with his neuro-Dr, and he said that Nate doesn't need to see any therapists. In a month he will send Nate to have an extensive neuro-evalution to see if there might be any subtle injuries, but so far so good. Nate can even drive in a couple of weeks.
Whewwww God is good!
Please pray for a 17-yr.old boy. He is undergoing treatment for a head injury similar to Nate's.
I believe that he will receive the same grace for healing as Nate received.
This has been an amazing journey. We will remember the love, support and prayers of so many.
Each day is a gift, to be opened with thanksgiving and shared.
Love to you all,
The Moore family

Day 21

We've had a quiet week. After making some calls, I was informed that Nate would have various therapists coming out to our home, rather than going in to SLO for outpatient treatments. This is to begin on Monday. I, of course, wanted everything to move along as rapidly as it had been at the hospital, but it seems a time to rest. (for Nate and I)
Steve is setting the crab pots to begin the Dungeness season today, and harvesting begins tomorrow. Cale and Joe Wells are Steve's deckhands and please pray for a safe and successful season.
Nate is reticent to post as he feels he's already had 'too much publicity' regarding his injury.
He is on facebook and seems to communicate well with all his friends.
I'll post again next week when we have received the therapist assessments and his follow up with Dr. Ramborg.
On October 5, I had written a scripture-prayer for Nate. It is found in Ephesians 3:20-21.
"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
to Him be glory in the church, by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever, Amen."

Those words truly sum up the events of these last weeks. Exceedingly abundantly....for sure!
Love, n' hugs,

Day 18

I just checked on Nate, in his own room, at home and resting comfortably. What an amazing few weeks! Nate was 9 days in a medically induced coma, nine days awake in the hospital, and now home. Only God could give us a prognosis like this! We are expecting home health care to come by today.
Steve is on his way to Half Moon Bay to get ready for Dungeness crab season. A few days ago, the prospect of being home alone with Nate was overwhelming, today I am at peace with it, and know all will continue to be good.
I am hoping Nate will do the next post....
hugs to you all,
Cathe

Day 16

Steve and I just left Sierra Vista, leaving Nate there in a 'step-down' room. He will call, if he wants company later. He plans on sleeping, watching tonights' football game, sleeping some more and being up and ready when he is discharged Tues. morning. He will be coming home tomorrow!
His recovery has outpaced every rehab facility. He will receive in-home visits this week from the various therapists. We are relieved, exhausted, and very thankful!
Updates for Nancy; She's coming home today, please continue to pray for her complete recovery.
Update 2; Happy 25th birthday, Cale!

Day 15

Hi everyone,
Today is Nate's last day at Sierra Vista. After tomorrow's reports, we will take him to Cottage Rehab in Santa Barbara. So many friends came by today for Nate, but he needed a lot of rest. For everyone who didn't see Nate; He sported a shaved head that revealed more wounds than we knew of, and clarity of thinking for longer periods of time.
Our prayer requests are healing and peace for the frequent headaches and rushes of anxiety he struggled with today. Also, for his sleep patterns, that remain switched. We trust God's will concerning his rehab; where and how long. He does need it, though he improves every day. I'll take my laptop to SB so I can post when we know what's next....
PS. Nancy may be home tomorrow. We still ask for complete healing and recovery from her illness.
PPS. Steve and I want to thank all the staff at Sierra Vista who took such good care of our son.
Again, thank you all for your prayers for our family...
Cathe
Cale's 25th BD is Tuesday!

Day 14
It was my turn to hang out with Nate today as Cathe was taking care of Jude. Nate continues to amaze me. We watched college football, cruised around the hospital in a wheelchair and hung out with some of our family friends as well as some of Nate's friends. He really is doing well. His memory is great although during conversation he does stumble on some simple words. He also tells some pretty far out stories from some crazy dreams he had while hibernating for 9 days. Altogether though, he is a waking miracle. We pray that his recovery continues at this pace every day. Thanks to all of our friends, family, and Nate's friends, you all are awesome. Steve

Day 13

Late post, as I spent all day with Nate. He is doing great! I want everyone to take the time to draw a deep breath, say 'Thank you, Jesus', and know like we do, that Nate will be ok!
Today was lightyears ahead of yesterday. He walks without assistance, in and out of bed, bathes, and dresses himself. The pneumonia was declared gone this afternoon, and the IV's are gone for good. He remains in the ICU through the weekend. He has been accepted at Cottage rehab in Santa Barbara for Monday. Medi-cal still needs to Ok it. By Monday, we suspect that he will have passed their criteria and may just come home. Its all good. He does need therapy. Speech, word recognition, etc. is better, but still a bit strange at times. I don't know who will be his nurse this weekend, but today was very relaxed and anybody could come hang out. I'll be at home babysitting Jude, so Steve will be at the hospital. Text him when you come by and he can let you in. Nate's sleep patterns have reversed so we are trying to keep him more active during the day and he may sleep better at night. I was able to wheel him outside and he liked it. Maybe a group could show up with Nate's t-shirts on and surprise him outside...He still needs to hydrate and eat. As his senses of smell and taste recover from the trauma of the last weeks, I'm sure he'll begin to respond. Suggestions received helped a lot! Our Thanks to everyone,
Cathe
Please keep Nancy in your prayers. She was responding to treatment, but has since suffered a setback. We ask for her complete recovery!!

Day 12

Home for the day. Nate was finally napping. We are told that he's more awake at night and sleepier during the day. Today was a busy one. It started with Nate calling Steve and telling him to get down there! Nate proceeded to talk to quite a few friends by phone. Late morning I was told that the funding for Nate was in-and in record time, too. When Santa Clara had a bed for him he would be transferred immediately. I got on the phone and had family visit, and a few friends got in also. Three hours later I am told that because he was able to shuffle, with assistance, out of his room, the criteria for the Medi-cal funding to Santa Clara, was now denied. Apparently he needed to also be unable to walk to qualify. Hmmm. Everyone on Nate's case is scrambling to try to get the funding back and get him to an acute facility immediately. Now they are also trying Cottage, in Santa Barbara.Bottom line is that he had a good day. He recognizes friends and family. He has more trouble with photos of friends and family. I listened in with the speech therapist and he obviously needs some help. Bringing up the right words is difficult, keeping a train of thought going is sketchy. Then he'll remember the random stuff. I'm sure this is typical of left frontal lobe damage. Everyone assures that he is young and healthy and will recover completely, in time.

Here is a list of specific prayer requests;
1.pneumonia- he still has rattling lungs. 2.Medi-cal Funding- he got it in record time, but lost it due to being able to shuffle some steps instead of relying solely on a wheelchair. 3.Where he is heading next keeps changing. We truly want God's will. 4. Continued prayer for divine peace. Today, he was much less agitated. 4.We are holding on, Nate keeps improving, but the need for rehab is evident.
Love and thanks to you all.
Cathe

end of Day 11

Nate returns to us more each day. He had a busy day with therapists and nurses, so he wanted only to sleep. I brought in an ipod and the tunes of Jack Johnson soothed him to sleep. Eating is the next hurdle, so we will entice him tomorrow with ?( the Jamba smoothie didn't even work!)
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your continued outpouring of prayer and love!
Cathe

Day 11

The blogging thing is new to us so we have been learning a lot...
The 'comment' word at the end of each day's blog can be clicked and no registration needed.
Hope this clears confusion, though emailing us is always ok!

We will probably get some idea of recovery today, as three therapists did an evaluation yesterday. We hear that he is doing very well, and by the way , it could take two years! My hope feel like a ping pong ball! They are trying to get all paperwork together to transfer him to a acute facility near San Jose. They take patients out of ICU, so it may be quick. We are truly trying to live, one day at a time...

Day 10

We are greatly relieved today. I went into the ICU room and Nate immediately said, 'mom', and wanted a hug. Thank you, Jesus! He knew the family, and had therapists in to work with him. We'll get the evaluations tomorrow, but all say 'he's doing remarkable!'. Everyone who has been covering Nate with prayers know that 'remarkable' is our God!
Further prayer requests are for Nate to transfer to the best rehab, and continue his 'remarkable recovery!
Thank you, thank you! Prayer has been felt by us all, it is so amazing. We have seen desperate needs at the ICU and want to take this time to ask that prayers for complete healing be said for Nate's friend, Scott. His mom, Nancy, is battling a rare blood disease. She is undergoing treatment, and we pray that she will be healed and home sooner than expected.

Day 9
Just back from hospital. At 2 pm Nate was woken up. Welcome back t0 the world Nate. He is goofy aggitated and wants out of that bed really bad. All which is good news to Cathe and me. Thank You all for your prayers. Even though there are so many unanswered questions regarding Nate's recovery we are thankful to see his eyes again. Friends of Nate, you are the greatest. Thanks for all of your support. More coming later..Steve No visitors yet, hopefully soon

day 8

Cathe and I went to the hospital this morning with the hopes that today they would wake Nate up based on yesterdays visit. It is not going to happen today. All of Nates numbers are really good but they are still weaning him off of the old sedatives and onto the new which will make it easier to wake him when they decide to do it. Naturally we were bummed but as the nurse said every day is a day closer to his recovery. We did not get any indication at this time as to when he might be awakened.
Our family is overwhelmed with the support we have gotten from our church friends our fishing friends and the community of Los Osos. Our faith in God and you all have made this journey much easier. We know that Nate is in great hands and that God is hearing every prayer offered up for Nate and our family. I trust you all had a safe halloween. We Love You, Steve Nate's Dad

Day 7

Today is October 31, Halloween.

It is a popular night for partying, drinking, having fun.

Have fun, dress up in costumes, and challenge yourself and your friends to party without the drinking.

Is it possible? Could you still have a great time? Most important, why should you?

I want to tell you a Halloween story, a scary Halloween story. It’s the scariest kind of story because it’s true.

Seven days ago, Nate’s family and friends woke up to phone calls, saying that Nate had been taken to Sierra Vista Hospital in SLO at 2am. He had head injuries and was in ICU, in critical but stable condition.

Steve and I were in a remote part of the Big Island, Hawaii. Our cell reception was spotty, the information hard to get. As Steve tried to find out what happened, I packed. We left the Hilo side for a two-hour drive to Kona. We were on our cells the entire time as they would alternate working and stopping. We had a new friend, Sarah, checking for flights out of Kona. She texted back that there were 3 seats left on the next flight out.

Quick answers to prayer got us on that flight and we settled in for five slow, no communication hours to the mainland. Once back in California, the waits for the Flyaway to Van Nuys, and the wait to leave the parking garage, were all interminable. Finally, at 11:30 pm, we were driving home.

The ICU staff knew we were coming. Dan, the night nurse, kindly spent about fifteen minutes explaining what we were going to see. It helped somewhat, but what could ever prepare a parent to see their son in a medically induced coma. The bolt apparatus coming out of his head monitored the pressure of any brain swelling. A ventilator breathed for him, and IV’s snaked about his arms. Medicine to keep him calm and in the coma flowed through his veins, as well as the alcohol from a night of drinking downtown. Medicine to fight pneumonia is now also being pumped through.

We could only stay a few minutes to pray for him, tell him we loved him, and then drove home to sleep the sleep of the exhausted.

The next morning we were back at ICU. This time, we wanted answers. Nate’s friends had bits of the story. An eyewitness had a vague description of Nate being punched, and hearing his head hit the ground. We are glad that some concerned citizens flagged down the SLO PD and they quickly determined that Nate needed medical attention. The case is a felony assault, unless more information changes that. It is in the hands of the SLO PD, and any witnesses that will come forward or call Crimestoppers anonymously.

Our complete focus in on Nate and his recovery. Rod, the social worker, talked to us about acute care facilities, sub-acute facilities, disability, and other subjects that suggested long term recovery. We pray this will not be the case. We want Nate to wake up, see us, and know who we are. Apart from a miracle, this is unlikely.

Nate’s family and friends are apart of the scariest Halloween story possible. Please read this, talk about it and have a safe, sober Halloween.

If not for yourself, do it for Nate.

May God bless you all,

Nate’s mom

Day 6

Nate is fighting pneumonia. This is common. The ICU staff at Sierra Vista and Dr. Ramborg hope to wake him for a quick check up this weekend. Up until this time he has had to stay in a medically-induced coma to keep him calm. He has not needed any surgical procedures to combat swelling. He has multiple injuries to his head. They could of been from direct impact, a fall, and subsequent jostling.
Right now, from an eye witness, this is a felony assault case. Anybody with any info can call crimestoppers or the SLO PD and give the info anonymously.
We thank everyone, those we know of and all we don't, for your prayers and support during this time.
